No White Fashion Show

As you know, lately I have become ever so involved in the local design community of Minneapolis (hey, we do what we can!) and had the privilege of supporting my fellow designers at the University of Minnesota in their latest endeavor, a fashion show inspired by the dark side of fairy tales.

Sixteen designers presented one look of an up-cycled version of their own creativity, thus perfectly fitting into my annoyingly repetitive theme of reusing weird supplies.  Materials ranged from ripped up old stuffed animals to chicken wire...yeah these people are as crazy as I am.  The show was also judged by Danielle Everine, a former contestant on Project Runway.  Take a look below and try to guess which fairytale belongs to whom, it's harder than it sounds (it the best of ways, of course).

So sorry about the poor photo quality, my sad iPhone doesn't have the help of Siri to improve picture quality...

Did you guess?  Wish I could tell you the answers....I'll take notes next time, promise.

Scrubbed Into Fashion 2012: The Recap!

I can't believe I did it.  I was starting to doubt myself in the eleventh hour if I could really turn painted-tarp like sleeves, placemats, and plastic into an outfit but somehow it all worked out! (I was saved by my lifesaver, my glue gun).  Let these pictures recreate the experience for those were weren't able to attend, shame on you.  Christopher Straub, a contestant on Project Runway, hosted the show and the Smile Network provided the sponsoring for the event.  The evening was filled with African tribal dancers, drummers, and some seven year old ballerinas (yeah I didn't get it either).  I didn't win, but congrats to Maisee Her who did! I included her pics, tell me what you think!  Apparently a big criteria was wearability........yeah I DON'T DO THAT.  And reflecting my own aesthetic is more important than making a boring outfit that someone actually hast to wear! (though that $500 would feel great in my pocket...)  This was an incredible experience and first fashion show, and many more to come!!! [and conquer ;)]

Check out the designer's bios, I was the only freshman, woot woot!

My collection was placed last in the sequence, AWESOME! I also used this crazy, gut busting, seizure provoking dubstep that I'm sure made everyone fall off of their seats.  In a good way.

Just lounging around, they should REALLY stop working so hard.

The venue was an amazing area in the TCF Bank Stadium at the University of Minnesota

Aww, look it's mom and dad! (they are the ones in the middle awkwardly staring at the camera)

Christopher Straub, the host of the show.  Check out his own design website here.

Children dancing with candles...WTF?

Mah girl, Kayna's collection! Yeah, get it!!

Aaaand...the other collections too...

Wait for it.....MY SHIT!!! Yeah I knew that's what you were waiting for this whole time :)

The DIY for these ankle straps will be coming soon, so keep checking back!

The show was followed by a questionnaire by three judges, just like project runway!  My heart was pounding so fast I thought it was going to rip out of my chest......sounds messy.

Let's break the tension with some tribal drummers. Yes.

The winner's collection, Maisee Her, and man on the right, please contact me ASAP...

The lovely people responsible for the production of this show, great job guys!

Get It While It's Hot!

Mark your calendars and buy your tickets 'cause they MIGHT be gone by tomorrow!  Scrubbed Into Fashion, a fashion show combining medical scrubs and an African theme that I will be attempting to design for is coming up (faster than I would like it) on April 14th, and all of you better be there.  Or else.  I'll think of some really motivating threat to make you not miss it but until then, buy your tickets HERE.

Twelve: Senior Fashion Show 2012

I had the amazing opportunity to volunteer at this year's senior fashion show at the University of Minnesota, Twelve.  Eleven seniors (one dropped out at the last minute...puts a little bit of a damper on the title, eh?) presented their graduating line to hundreds of locals and family.  Though the reason for the successful attendance was probably my presence.....but the show was pretty cool too, I guess.  I definitely had my favorites, the best being a line of twisted, avant garde menswear.  I can't wait until I finally have the opportunity to showcase what I've been working on for four years!  I get to show a little sample at Scrubbed into Fashion on April 14th (Mark your calendars!!), hope it won't all go to my head. ;)

This was my favorite collection, I loved the playful twist on the original menswear suit and the muted color palette to draw attention to the insane details.  I mean, come'on, where have you seen this before?? Nowhere.

Oops, this girl forgot to open her eyes, she surprisingly didn't fall off the runway (well, it was completely flat anyways).  This was in the sophomore preview before the show started but the craftsmanship is impeccable.  That is one show stopping collar (since we are always on the topic of detachable collars) and hell, I can never say no to black leather (even if it's fake).

Oh look, she woke up! Just in time for the show.

Boy, put some Chapstick on those lips.
